What a difference time makes
So I am here almost a year after my divorce has been finalized. I have changed a lot down to 220 lbs from 287 lbs and still working on loosing more. The house is no longer a sterile white for the walls, there is now color! The rooms are getting finished (although I have stalled a bit getting to my office) and I am replacing things like the old bed and some of the furniture to make it more to my liking/style.

I am currently taking a medication for my rosacea that the dermatologist says will cure me in 5 months. It has some heavy side effects that I am on the look out for but none of them are permanent.

My business partner for The Dueling Grounds has me convinced that we can and will be able to put up a chess match this year, the script is good and we are still revising it... Now if I could just get that meeting with the festival managers so that I can get their answer.

I am a St Paul Vulcan now... I am Sparky 12 and this is my running year, I will be in the St Paul St Patrick's Day Parade this weekend and then all over St Paul the rest of the day. If you are out give me a shout!

Financial Freedom...
It has always been a challenge for me to remain debt free, you see I am the type of guy that wants to help people out and wants to have nice things. Sometimes that lands me in a spot of trouble financially.

Right now I am digging out from the debt that I have been stuck with due to the divorce and my fixing the house up to my standards after the divorce. I have a handy little app on my phone that says, if I stick to the plan, that I could pay everything but my student loans off in about 6 years.

I am not sure that I will be able to stick to the plan but I will do what I can cause financial freedom of all my debt would be GREAT.

Making the house mine again part 2
Master Bedroom:
New Bed done but getting a head and foot board (new experience for me there)
Still working on the art

Second Bedroom:
All painted
Bought a new Desk that is in this room for the time being
Moved several things from my home office into this room so that I can redo the home office

Third Bedroom:
Currently dismantling this room so that I can repaint the walls and ceiling
Moving all of this into the Second Bedroom for the time being, will be my office again soon.

Part of all of this is forcing me to look at all of the items that I have/had in the house and evaluate if they are needed or not; OR if they are things that I really want to keep around because they were bought for or with my Ex. It is an interesting thing for me, I am learning that I have been holding on to many things just because I MIGHT need it in the future... I am working on correcting that.

Making the house mine again...
as I am sure all of you know I am divorced now, if you did not know that then we should sit down and have a beer more often... anyway just a note here (as a way of tracking my life) to talk about what I have done so far to the house.

Master Bedroom:
Painted walls and ceiling, hardwood floors refinished, New Bed (Friday), new dresser. New artwork coming soon.

Bedroom #1 (guest bedroom/sewing room):
Painted walls, examined floor it is passable, painting Ceiling this week.

Bedroom #2 (my office):
Color for walls chosen

Hallway:
Painted walls and Ceiling, refinished hardwood floors.

Kitchen:
Painted walls and Ceiling, bought some new items for cooking, installed a counter that I am currently using as a Bar. Changed out light fixture.

I am going to get these rooms fully finished, then attempt to tackle the basement, re-installing a half bath, remodel the "living room" area in the basement including new carpet.

Many things to yet be done but the list is getting shorter.

OMG
What a change from a couple years ago... I am a St Paul Vulcan now, I have 7 people that are some of the best friends that I could ask for all due to the 10 days of winter carnival. I think that The Dueling Grounds is moving in the direction that both Chris and I want.

Things that are interesting are a start on patching some things up between me and another person, I hope the lines of communication remain open there.

Waiting to see what the Divorce will end up costing me in taxes, I am hoping to write off the amount that I paid her in spouse support. Waiting for the taxes to see if I can move forward on my debt repayment plan or if I need to modify it.

Working on a possible Human Combat Chess match for MN Ren Fest with Chris, I hope to see some of our old fighters come back for this.

That is all for now, light to your path

Interesting parallels
Recently many people have posted about the Girl Scout that wants people to boycott Girl Scout Cookies because she does not believe that the organization should allow transgender kids into the GS. I want to make one thing clear here before I start, I do not agree with her and do not support her opinions at all; to that end I will be buying more GS cookies as a way of showing that I DO NOT support her opinions.

I now continue, I admire the girls courage and dedication to, what must be, her ideals and beliefs. She thought that something the organization had done was incorrect, she had some facts to back up these ideal and beliefs, and she came up with an innovative way to try and make a change.

Another friend of mine posted a few days ago about this, stating that many were demanding to know exactly who this child was so that they could harass her as she was harassing others. This is not the way to make change, harassing this child will only deepen her beliefs in what many of us consider to be a misguided or malformed opinion of the world. Harassing her will serve only to show her how right she is because those that support the idea she opposes resort to abusive tactics, again strengthening her beliefs.

Instead we should oppose her stance by taking the contrary stance only, not taking part in the boycott. Answering her video with personal attacks will do nothing to convince her of any incorrectness in her opinions.

I call this an interesting parallel because recently standing up for things I believe in, denouncing a business choice that was made as a poor choice (in my opinion), has made me a target of ridicule and has cost me some people I thought were friends.

Interesting... and a bit ranty
So this year has been one of groups and people being let go from Ren Fest. and I keep seeing the same thing over and over, that "...have heard that MN in particular can be really hard on it's cast." or that "alot of things that mnrf does to actors is unfair." Or "They treat the actors very badly"

What the heck are these people talking about? I would like to have some examples of being treated badly or unfairly. Cause from where I am sitting as a cast member, and director of two groups Festival is operating as a business and trying to keep the show going in hard economic times.

To some this fair is a playground or sandbox they get to play in, I am sorry this is a business kids, choices have to be made, sometimes hard choices. This will include firing people that they feel violated policy, are not entertaining, are not fitting with the type of entertainment the festival is moving toward, people that refuse to comply with managements wishes, or people that have a melt down in a shop in front of our paying customers. But these are choices that the Directors have to make, at some point it could be me that they fire; I tell you what I will say "Thank you for allowing me the chance to work here for all this time, and I will look forward to coming out as a patron"

Another news flash for folks out there, we CHOOSE to do this if you feel it is unfair, or difficult or any other negative then simply do not do the festival. No more explanation needed, if you are not happy with the way the ED or owner is running festival then do something else during August and September.

Let the rain of comments begin!

Life or something like it
Wow I have not posted here in a while... So let's see some updates:

Fight Troupe - interesting, some shows I thought were long enough are WAY too short.
Divorce - Still ongoing
Health - getting better all the time

I actually joined back up with Weight Watchers to try and get rid of the nearly 100 lbs of excess weight that I had. I was, at my heaviest, 285lbs... This is not conducive to fighting or anything really, so I have been following the advise of my Doctor and following the plan. I am happy to say at my last weigh in I was right around 247lbs... That is nearly 40lbs down from my heaviest. Now I lost a lot of that prior to going on WW just in changing from eating out every day of the week to making better choices and cooking at home.

Siouxland is fast approaching, I am excited and nervous... I want the troupe to have great shows so that we have more under our belt for coming back to MN in 2011/12 for a reason we should continue to be invited back.

Plans for fest...
72... Yep 72 is the current number of fight parts that Chris, Anj, and I have sent in as a proposal to the Minnesota Ren Fest. That means that if we get no other performers than the ones we had last year each person is learning roughly 4 fights.

Our schedule might look something like this (really REALLY tentative since we are still reviewing scenes and need to get approval from fest) :

10am Large Melee type fight
11am Kid friendly stage show
noon Kid friendly Weapon demo
1pm Kid Friendly weapon demo
3pm stage show
5 or 6pm Large Melee type fight

Then in between these performances we have street fights, and the possibility of a fight in the feast.

We will be busy. There is no shortage of places for folks to fight... Bring your A game fighters!

Festival
OK so I have not posted in a VERY long time, but that is not likely to change with this one post. I felt that I needed to do a fest recap since I was doing some new stuff this year.

The Good:
Chris, Anj, and I founded a fight troupe this year, The Dueling Grounds LLC. . All three of us missed the sound of street fights and wanted to bring that back this year. We had many people show interest and we put together several fights that went very well. We even inspired another group to get back to fighting, over all a good thing. The art of stage combat is something I am very passionate about, if I can inspire others to have that same passion it is a good thing.

The Sheriff's men and playing the Sheriff was another good thing, we faltered a bit this year do to some things in real life distracting me. Over all I love the guys and gal I am working with in the group and very much hope that all of them will be with me again next year. We did several bits that have been sorely missing such as tax collection and really bad woo'ing.

Being invited out - This year I was invited to do more things with more people than I remember ever being invited too. It was incredible and heart warming.

The Bad:
As mentioned above I have had some things in real life going badly, but I am working through that.

Injuries we had a few, some from fighting (Peggy, Deb and Jamie) and some from people's own reckless abandon (Jesse, me, and others). Only two injuries were really bad and those are on the mend now. I hope to see all the folks back next year to fight again.

The Ugly:
I had an issue come up this year that I really reacted strongly too, and honestly I should not have. It was a mistake on my part and I think it was fueled by the above mentioned crap in my personal life.

Summary:
This year was one of the best years I have had out at fest in a long time. I was doing something I love with people that are as passionate about it as I am! Most of these people are, like me, already thinking about what can be done to make next year even better!

Thank you all for a great year at festival!

The on coming storm
This weekend is going to be busy for me.

Tonight:
This is the only night I can assure that I have time with my wife.
So I am missing the Mayor's rehearsal and a housewarming party

Saturday:
7am - Make sure I am awake
8am - Get on the road to festival
9am - Arrive at fest for Royal court meeting
11am or Noon - head home
7pm - Sheriff's Men meeting

Sunday:
8am - Wake up
9am - on the road to the Fest Auditions
10am - cheer on all my fighters
11am - possibly still bartering over contracts
noon - DG meeting and rehearsal
4pm - home again

I missed rehearsal with mamajenzie because of weather last night. This is OK as I think the only thing we need to work on is the very end of the fight from the vault off my thigh to the end kiss.

Apparently I am...
I Am A: Lawful Neutral Human Wizard (5th Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-12

Dexterity-12

Constitution-12

Intelligence-17

Wisdom-13

Charisma-13

Alignment:
Lawful Neutral A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs him. Order and organization are paramount to him. He may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or he may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government. Lawful neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you are reliable and honorable without being a zealot. However, lawful neutral can be a dangerous alignment because it seeks to eliminate all freedom, choice, and diversity in society.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

So I own a part of a Company now...
OK so when I made a statement last October at Festival I never thought it would bring me here.

I told people at the Cordial Cup that I was intent on bringing street fights back to the MN Ren Fest because Luis and the Merry Man show had inspired me and had shown me how much I missed swinging steel.

Fast forward to November of last year, I get a shock at the number of people that turn out to the first meeting we hold about stage combat. Even after the advisory that because there have been so few people doing it these last 4 years (might be wrong on that number) we cannot expect Festival to shower us with cash. The number of interested parties was higher than I expected.

We start planning and come up with the idea of many street fights with 3-4 larger productions a day (30 minute stories) thus the Salon fights are born. Also the name "The Dueling Grounds" is chosen for the new fight troupe.

April delivered crushing news as I applied for insurance and was refused because it was too easy for an audience member to get hurt. I encourage everyone to stick with it. Behind the scenes Anj and I are scrambling to find out how other troupes deal with this. We get two solid leads from Art of Combat and Babes with Blades (THANK YOU BOTH!). Trouble is the companies that insure them are talking about a Corporate insurance policy not individuals. Anj, Chris, Bobbi and I go out for dinner we chat a bit and make the choice to create an LLC. Each household is 50% owner of the LLC with the ladies being 26% owner and the guys being 24% owner.

Just this last week we have our insurance, our LLC certificate, and our tax ID number. I guess this makes me part owner of a small business.
